‘Shades of Knowledge’
A modern and innovative look for Kuwait University’s New Campus at Al-Shadadiyah
The construction contract has now been signed that will ensure that work on the new Administration Facilities project at Kuwait University’s new campus can start in October this year.
The project, led by the Kuwait University Construction Program (KUCP), forms an important part of the State’s ambitious plans to develop and expand its foremost academic institution.
Pace will be responsible for the design and construction of the administration buildings, working once more alongside Skidmore, Owings and Merrill.
The President of Kuwait University, Professor Hussein Al-Ansari, spoke about the new project saying: “In addition to being the campus’ main gateway, the buildings will house the main administrative and ceremonial functions, and will serve the needs of students, faculty, administrators, and visitors alike.”
One of the main challenges from a design perspective was how to create a unified architectural feel… our goal was to marry functionality with a memorable and iconic aesthetic – our main source of inspiration being the local vernacular architecture.”
The modern and distinctive design of the new Administrative Facilities is called ‘Shades of Knowledge’, the concept incorporates the use of light, lacy shading ‘veils’ which envelope each building, screening out harsh solar radiation and permitting a cooler microclimate zone.
